Artist
Patrizia Comand was born in Corbetta, a town close to Milan. After attending the Artisitc Lycee she enrolled in the Brera Art Academy, where she took courses given by Usellini, Ballo, Marchese, Ilario Rossi and graduated in 1972.
In 1974 she had her first art show, which was followed by more than thirty one-man shows in different Italian cities and other countries.
In 1991, after spending 4 years in Venice, she moved to Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico) where she lived for a long time.
After returning to Italy, she started showing her work again and participated in important national and international shows such as “The Real and the Imaginary – Convergences and Fractures in Contemporary Lombard Art” held in 1994 in Cremona at the Santa Maria della Pieta’, curated by Mario De Micheli; and the International Lineart Fair in Gand (Belgium) with the Rotta Gallery.
In 1995 the Minister of Culture of Madeira (Portugal) invited her to hold a one-man show at the Government Palace featuring the paintings from her “Central American” period. These paintings included dramatically expressive portraits of old people, women, children and campesinos. Some of these paintings were also shown at galleries in Milan, Genua and Rome, under the sponsorship of the Embassies of El Salvador and Guatemala.
In 1995 she participated in “The Po in the 1900’s – Art, Cinema and Literature” curated by Laura Gavioli at the Castle Civic Gallery in Mesola, Ferrara.
In 1998 and 1999 her work appeared in group-shows in Tokyo and Gifu (Japan), while in 2000 the Chateau of Gruyeres Foundation – International Center of Fantastic Art in Switzerland gave her an important one-man show and also purchased a large painting of hers entitled “Bewitched by the moon”.
In October 2001 the Province of Milan sponsored a one-man show of her paintings at the Spazio Giucciardini entitled “On the Edge of Life” with a catalogue curated by Rossana Bossaglia.
In late 2001 and early 2002 she participated in group shows in Kawasaki (Japan), at the Biennial of the Fantastic in Paris, and also in “To Backlight the Po – Padanian Art, Flood and Surroundings” organized by the Province of Rovigo at the Olivetani Palace.
In 2002 her work was exhibited at an important show curated by Vittorio Sgarbi at the Gotic Palace in Piacenza entitled “Padanian Surealism” and then, again with Sgarbi, she participated in the show “From De Chirico to Leonor Fini – Fantastic Painting in Itlay”, at the Revoltella Museum – Gallery of Modern Art, in Trieste.
2003 was another intense year with one-man shows in private galleries and public spaces, culminating in a group show at the Jannone Gallery in Milan entitled “Softly Women” which travelled to Paris, Barcelona afterwards, and another group show in Japan organized by the city of Kawasaki.
In 2004 she had a one-man show in the Sansoni Gallery in Pavia, and at the end of the year her hometown, Corbetta, presented her with the “2004 CULTURAL AWARD”.
2005 has been another year of exceptional achievements. Her sketch was accepted for a large painting to be hung at the Milan Courthouse where many precious works of art are on display, and she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Pope BENEDICT XVI for the Chamber of Popes in the Superga Basilica in Turin.
Finally, the city of Corbetta has organized another one-man show for her in the Chamber of the Columns at the city Hall as a fitting conclusion tot eh Cultural Award she received the previous year.
She also has paintings on permanent exhibit at several foreign art galleries, including the Irina Maldonado Gallery in Tolendo (Spain) and the Zabbeni Gallery in Vevey on Lake Geneva (Switzerland).
