Artist

Antonio Biancalani was born in Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany, in 1948. Still very young he discovered his vocation and thus started his artistic education as a self-taught artist, participating in numerous competitions and national exhibitions. Throughout the years of him being an artist he has always been devoted to the human body, and thus to thorough studies on the physicality of the body, which to this day is his preferred subject matter when painting.
In 1975 he went on to study at the Art Academy in Florence, and in 1980 he started to exhibit his work in major galleries and public spaces throughout Italy and Europe, including cities such as France, Germany, Belgium, and Spain. Furthermore he was credited with an important exhibition at the Palace of United Nation in Geneva, Switzerland, and the participation at the "EXPO Art" in New York.
The spaces depicted and as such visualized by Biancalani resemble bare, and thus austere interiors settings. Yet the artist’s choice of pictorial matter applied to each canvas suggests a profound movement emerging from within, implying vaguely the existence of possibly existent shapes that surround the main subject.
Furthermore, when contemplating Biancalani’s spaces from a formal/ distinct point of view, the walls within the paintings appear to be covered in writing, which, similar to the mark-making of ‘graffiti’, reminds us of the subtly engraved evidence left by time and man.
Hence when the viewer’s gaze is traveling across the paintings, it would notice their worn out plasters, the varying shades of fading color, engravings and abrasions, which seduce the imagination to wander off. Thus, our imagination is led to digress from the painted wall to the vastness of the above lingering stormy sky.
It is when the imagined reaches its utmost peak that it would break apart and disperse into a myriad of atoms, experiencing an extreme condition yet a sensual triumph enforced by the melting/ syndication of the organic and physical world.

The figure therefore represents the ambivalence, the continuous suspense between presence and absence. A condition that Biancalani visualizes through the ambiguity of creating paintings, which appear static considering the compositional order of the pictorial score, but which imply the tracing of time when exploring the structural visualization of the constitutive matter." As Nicola Micieli wrote in one of his published critics:
Biancalani’s interiors – either with objects or figures placed within - always embody the bright and warm embrace of Tuscany’s golden light, which, imposed by the use of texture and color, describes his vision and vibration towards landscapes.
